On September 8, San Antonians will join thousands of rallies being held in cities and towns around the world to demand our leaders commit to building a fossil free world that works for all of us.
From the White House to the Austin’s Statehouse, national and state leaders continue to give cover to the very worst climate offenders while working to actively stave off the clean-energy revolution, universal health care, and the sort sof jobs with justice that our communities desperately need.
We celebrate that our local leaders have committed to building a climate plan for San Anto. However, we can’t equivocate: In this most racially and economically segregated of large cities, we must declare our commitment to get off fossil fuels by 2030 and build a truly sustainable economy founded on the principles of equity and justice for all.
We gather in ceremony and prayer. We gather with music and art. We gather in poetry to cultivate a positive vision of the world we want.
Before we open Rise for Climate at 11 a.m. in Milam Park, young people from across the city will meet in the park to illustrate a banner and create other artworks (sidewalk chalk, anyone?) demonstrating their needs and desires for their future.
(With 80% chance of storms being forecast, a backup “rain-out” location is being sought. Possibly Confluence Park.)
Music to include Ruben Martinez, Son Queers, y mas. Poetry with Suzanne Green and others. Speakers including reps from Ignition Green, Alamo Sierra Club, Stand with Soap Works, Society of Native Nations, Public Citizen, MOVE Texas, and others. … (New artists and allies are joining us every day!)
THE POWER IS IN OUR HANDS.
Nations have failed us. The power to transform our planet lives in our families and our communities.
Our city can develop a climate plan that prioritizes the needs of those who are most at risk from rapid climate change—communities who have been too long marginalized and disempowered. We can grow a new culture in San Antonio that rises to the opportunity of a new era and refuses to be overwhelmed by the toxic politics from those who seek to dominate us.
And we can listen to and be led by our young people, those inheriting the immense challenges we’ve laid in our wake.
So pack in a lunch, bring your vision/artwork/poem/prayer, and join us for this international event on Saturday downtown.
Commit to bringing at least one other person with you.

San Antonio: ¡Únete por el clima el sábado!
El 8 de septiembre, San Antonians se unirá a miles de mítines celebrados en ciudades y pueblos de todo el mundo para exigir a nuestros líderes que se comprometan a construir un mundo libre de fósiles que funcione para todos nosotros.
Desde la Casa Blanca hasta el Statehouse de Austin, los líderes nacionales y estatales continúan dando cobertura a los peores delincuentes climáticos mientras trabajan para evitar la revolución de la energía limpia, la atención médica universal y los trabajos de clase con justicia que desesperadamente nuestras comunidades necesitar.
Celebramos que nuestros líderes locales se hayan comprometido a construir un plan climático para San Anto. Sin embargo, no podemos equivocarnos: en esta gran segregación racial y económica de las grandes ciudades, debemos declarar nuestro compromiso de abandonar los combustibles fósiles para 2030 y construir una economía verdaderamente sostenible basada en los principios de equidad y justicia para todos.

Las naciones nos han fallado. El poder de transformar nuestro planeta vive en nuestras familias y nuestras comunidades.
Nuestra ciudad puede desarrollar un plan climático que priorice las necesidades de aquellos que están en mayor riesgo debido al rápido cambio climático: comunidades que han estado demasiado tiempo marginadas y sin poder. Podemos hacer crecer una nueva cultura en San Antonio que se abre a la oportunidad de una nueva era y se niega a ser abrumado por la política tóxica de aquellos que buscan dominarnos.
Y podemos escuchar y ser guiados por nuestros jóvenes, aquellos que heredan los inmensos desafíos que hemos creado a nuestro paso.
