Over the next 120 years it evolved into the sprawling, multifaceted jewel San Antonians enjoy today, home to the San Antonio Zoo, the state’s first public golf course, the Japanese Tea Garden, the Sunken Garden Theater, and the Witte Museum. Extensively researched and illustrated with some two hundred archival photographs and vintage postcards, Brackenridge: San Antonio’s Acclaimed Urban Park is the first comprehensive look at the fascinating story of this unique park and how its diverse layers evolved to create one of the city’s foremost gathering places.»
Deceleration note: Sacred to Native peoples near and far, the center of the headwaters of the San Antonio River, Yanaguana, has been targeted for a City of San Antonio redevelopment project that will destroy many elder trees and forcefully drive out federally protected migratory birds (per special waiver secured by COSA). We look forward to a future updated edition of this work that recognizes this injustice and treats the proper ethical response that would include placing Indigenous leaders over future development decisions at this site.
About Lewis F. Fisher
Lewis F. Fisher is the author of numerous books about San Antonio and Texas, including Greetings from San Antonio: Historic Postcards of the Alamo City, American Venice: The Epic Story of San Antonio’s River, Saving San Antonio: The Preservation of a Heritage, Maverick: The American Name That Became a Legend, Chili Queens, Hay Wagons, and Fandangos, and The Spanish Plazas in Frontier San Antonio. He has received numerous local, state, and national writing awards and was named a Texas Preservation Hero by the San Antonio Conservation Society in 2014.
