Understanding ‘Three Sisters Agriculture’
In this talk we will discuss what constitutes “Three sisters agriculture;” the benefits and drawbacks of attempting this method in Central Texas; and the importance of these plants to Native communities. We will share information and updates about our current and future garden projects and events. The talk will include some traditional stories and Cherokee language names for plants and traditional foods. We will also go over the traditional process of nixtamalization, so participants who do decide to grow corn can get the most nutrition out of their harvest.
About the Speaker
Doug Martin is the Cultural Presenter for the Central Texas Cherokee Township. He leads the group’s initiative to promote Three Sisters agriculture and aims to support the Cherokee Nation’s food sovereignty focus by providing heirloom seed to township members and community organizations interested in propagating native seed and returning the excess to the program for further distribution.
Join us early at 5 p.m. in the vegetable gardens in the Pioneer Village. We will be planting the three sisters demonstration garden at Zilker Botanical Garden. (No entrance fee after 5 p.m.)
