Ocelots in Texas: Conservation Challenges and Opportunities
Presented by Sharon Wilcox, PhD
Join Dr. Sharon Wilcox, Senior Texas Representative with Defenders of Wildlife, as she presents a program in person for us to learn more about Texas’ own “leopard,” the ocelot. Discover the challenges and opportunities to conserving and restoring the native ocelot population in Texas, and what you can do to help support recovery of this native Texas wildcat.
About Dr. Wilcox
Dr. Sharon Wilcox leads the Defenders of Wildlife ocelot conservation program in South Texas and is part of a landmark project to restore jaguars to portions of central New Mexico and Arizona. She is an Associate Professor of Practice in Geography and Sustainability at the University of Texas at San Antonio, and she serves on the Board of Directors for the Friends of Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge. Dr. Wilcox is the co-editor of the book, Historical Animal Geographies, and has authored a number of scholarly articles and book chapters examining contemporary and historical interactions of humans and wild cats in the borderlands. Her research has received support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Social Science Research Council.
We will meet at Alamo Colleges District, 2222 N. Alamo Street. Sign up here if you plan to attend in person.
