A public hearing has been scheduled to discuss a wastewater renewal permit from Corpus Christi Polymers, a petrochemical plastics facility. The permit would allow CCP to operate a desalination plant near Corpus Christi Bay. After filtering for fresh water, the desalination plant would discharge 33 million gallons of brine into the bay daily, increasing salinity levels, a marine dead-zone, and harm local ecosystems and communities.
Writes Chase Rogers at the Corpus Christi Caller-Times:
“The hearing comes as five different sites near Corpus Christi Bay are being considered for the costly desalination facilities. In addition to CCP’s site, the Port of Corpus Christi and the city of Corpus Christi are eyeing two different locations, each. All of the sites are contending to be the first marine desalination facility of this scope and size in Texas.”
The expansion would also make Corpus Christi Polymers the largest producer of PET plastics in the world. Environmental advocates invite folks to tell the TCEQ that the renewal of the wastewater permit will bring nothing but harm to the Coastal Bend.
