Meet outside the Urban Ecology Center.  Once gathered, the group will go on a short nature walk to gain some inspiration for the embroidery activity. Then we’ll return to the outdoor picnic tables to arrange materials and learn the basics of embroidery. We’ll use images of native plants [since it’s still winter!] and basic techniques to try our hand at this classic art form. 

Encounter the Savannah Restoration and Wildscape Demonstration Garden and learn a little bit about these unique features here at Phil Hardberger Park. Please note, we will be working with hoops, thread, needles, and scissors.

No Art Experience Necessary! Weather permitting.  Class size is limited.  Registration required.

The media often portrays our climate future as a choice between bleak and bleaker, which may seem justified given the many impacts of global warming that we are already seeing. But it doesn’t have to be that way, because if we understand the science behind global warming, then we can also see a pathway to its solution. In this presentation, Dr. Bennett will give you a brief overview of the surprisingly simple basic science behind global warming and of the consequences we can expect from this warming. He will then explain how we can in principle take the steps necessary to envision a “post-global warming” future, meaning a future in which today’s children will someday be able to talk about global warming as a once-serious problem that we found a way to solve. Note: This talk builds upon Dr. Bennett’s freely posted global warming primer.

Bennett, an astronomer and published science writer many times over, makes the science behind global warming clear and easy to understand in the hopes of defining its solutions and making them accessible to all.

He estimates reaching more than 10,000 people in 25 cities during his 2015 Relativity Tour, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity.

Join us Thursday February 9, for “Walk on the River: A Black History of the Alamo City.” In this independent film we take the time to document both the history and the contributions African-Americans have made to the fabric of San Antonio, Texas from Emancipation to the Civil Rights movement. We chronicle the path of freed Blacks establishing communities, churches and schools in the 1800’s to thriving Black-owned businesses that flourished during the Jim Crow era.

The original Walk on the River, completed in August of 2018 is one of the most successful documentary films in San Antonio, TX. It has helped to educate thousands about the Black Experience here in our city.

We touch on religion, politics, education, social organizations and community all in an attempt to paint a vivid picture of life for Black San Antonians in the past to help create a knowledge base, a sense of pride and a blueprint for the next generations moving forward.

To mark the 20th anniversary of the Collaborative on Health and the Environment (CHE), we’re hosting a series of informal, online conversations with leading thinkers, researchers and innovators in the field of environmental health and justice.

Our fourth CHE Café is co-hosted by The New School at Commonweal, and will feature a conversation between Dr. Linda Birnbaum and Dr. Ami Zota, two innovative leaders in efforts to promote environmental health and justice in the U.S..

The harm to human health of chemical exposures is now recognized as a global crisis on par with climate change and biodiversity loss. Effectively addressing this challenge means adopting new approaches that recognize the complexity of systems with multi-disciplinary approaches, prioritize precaution and prevention, and address disproportionate impacts and environmental injustices. 

The conversation will explore current progress and challenges in the field, and how best to move toward a world with air, water and food that doesn’t threaten human health.

Join Gardopia Gardens on Saturday mornings to volunteer on the 0.5 acre Eastside Micro-Farm to practice healthy living and sustainability!

On Saturday morning Gardopia invites community members to get their hands dirty and cultivate San Antonio’s little slice of a garden utopia! From composting, chicken care, planting, crop rotation, organizing, and more! We are open to individuals, friends, families, beginners, experts, and anyone else who wants to help cultivate an educated, health, and environmentally sustainable city!

COVID-19: In order to help keep volunteers healthy, we offer free masks, have an open air space to allow for ventilation, and are currently keeping volunteer groups to 25 people or less to allow for optimal physical distancing.

AITSCM welcomes you to our civic unity fair, ¡Unidos, Si Se Puede! March 18, 2023 located at the Historic Mission Marquee Plaza. The goal of the event is to offer San Antonio students and their families an opportunity to explore their civic rights, duties, and opportunities.

AIT’s Office of Civic Engagement and a host of civic-centered organizations will offer resources targeting ballot access, education, community engagement, and wellness.

Additionally, local government and community organizations will showcase their public service initiatives and provide students with an opportunity to volunteer and/or learn at their respective organizations. Local employers offering summer employment will also be in attendance.

The run of show will feature cultural arts performances, healing circles, educational displays, public speakers and a film screening. The 2014 biopic film “Cesar Chavez” will cap off the day’s festivities. Of course, local vendors will provide food, arts and crafts, and product giveaways.

Bandera Market is a state-certified farmer’s market open every weekend Saturdays 10 am-5 PM, Sundays 11 am-5 PM, and the third Friday night of every month 2-6 PM for a special event. The market offers to produce, eggs, honey, artisan bread, German & Puerto Rican baked goods, plants, planters, custom wood products, CBD, boutiques, artisan crafts, jams, jellies, and much more. Our general meetings are on the third Tuesday of each month at William R. Sinkin Eco Centro. They are free and open to everyone. Socializing begins at 6:00 p.m., program at 6:30 p.m.. Presentations last about an hour. 

January Topic & Speaker

The San Antonio Zoo’s Center for Conservation & Research (SAZCCR) has active conservation programs across the globe. Danté Fenolio, who runs the Center for Conservation & Research for San Antonio Zoo (SAZCCR), will describe several projects, including: 

1. A collaboration with indigenous groups in Amazonian Peru, working to maintain stands of rainforest on traditional lands, in spite of very challenging logging, hydrocarbon extraction, and mining activities. 
2. A partnership with the Austral University in Valdivia, Chile, developing a series of labs to breed critically endangered amphibians from the temperate rainforests in the region, to address stressors from deforestation and forest fragmentation. 
3. A partnership with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, documenting the diversity and distribution of cavefishes in south China; amazingly, China has 120 species of cavefishes, more than any other region of the world, however nearly all are threatened with contamination and over-extraction of groundwater. 
4. A partnership with Japanese biologists to keep Japanese Giant Salamanders in the wild, by implementing “salamander ladders”, along streams with small to mid-sized dams that isolate populations and reduce genetic diversity. 
5. The DEEPEND project, a consortium of biologists examining impacts of oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico on the local species. 
6. Finally, SAZCCR works with state and federal wildlife authorities to bioinventory subterranean habitats ranging from the Ozarks to Texas to the Floridan Aquifer;  it also develops captive husbandry and breeding protocols for imperiled and critically endangered species.

Eco Centro is located at San Antonio College, 1802 North Main Avenue @ Locust Street. There is a parking lot adjacent to Eco Centro which is entered from Locust Street. We can also use SAC parking lots 14, 15 and 17 (map of parking lots) to the north, west and south of the STIC building across North Main Avenue from Eco Centro.

Parking is also allowed on the residential streets to the east, north and south of Eco Centro.

Bexar Audubon is a diverse and supportive community that values our natural world and works together to ensure a healthy habitat for birds, other wildlife, and people. They host regular outings and events, including a monthly meeting on a range of environmental topics.

Field Ornithology Camp at Hog Island

Join us Wednesday, January 25 in the conference room at Alamo Colleges District, 2222 N. Alamo, for our first in-person gathering for a monthly meeting in almost three years! We’d like to invite you to arrive at 6:00 PM for refreshments and socializing before the program begins at 6:30 PM. If you plan to attend in person, please sign up here so we know how many people we will need to accommodate with refreshments and seating.

Yvette Stewart, Community Outreach Coordinator for Audubon Texas, will present via Zoom about her Field Ornithology Camp at Hog Island, which was a week of all things avian, learning in small groups, field settings about bird biology and evolution, nesting behavior, songs, migration, and conservation. Yvette has a Bachelor’s in Wildlife and Conservation Biology from the University of Rhode Island and Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Texas. A lover of all creatures from tiny spiders to soaring eagles, Yvette is most happy when she’s showing others the wonders of the natural world and prompting people to learn and grow in the great outdoors. She has been with Audubon Texas since 2018 and currently leads two state-wide programs: Audubon’s Conservation Leaders for Young Women (ACL) and Bird City Texas (BCT).

Corina Solis, Senior Conservation Assistant, Mitchell Lake Audubon Center (MLAC), will give a recap in person of the camp she attended, Birds of Maine Island: A service week. The campers learned seabird identification, bird banding, adaptations, migration, and ecology while participating in active restoration work. Corina has a degree in Biology with a concentration in Ecology from Texas A&M-San Antonio and has been with MLAC for four years.

Through our Vax-abilitySTRONG Provider Workshop, participants can increase their knowledge on how to easily make a health care environment more disability-friendly.
