In Bexar County and surrounding areas, there are a number of challenges with our native soils. How would you like to learn about some ways to improve your soil health? Are you curious about soil amendments and what each product can do to help improve your plant’s overall health? Then come to this event to learn more.
A soil amendment is any material added to a soil to improve its physical properties, such as water retention, permeability, water infiltration, drainage, aeration, and structure. The goal is to provide a better environment for roots. Don from Nature’s Creation will be at this event to teach participants all about soil health, different types of soil, organics, and other soil amendments such as Lava Sand, Green Sand, Expanded Shale, and more! This is a seminar you won’t want to miss!
By Following Nature, Nature’s Creation provides the home gardener, landscaper, and farmer with a list of products with solutions to fertilization, soil improvement, insect control, disease control, and weed control. Using proven natural ingredients including botanicals and natural minerals, Nature’s Creation provides you with the most attractive and most trouble-free landscape and garden without harming the environment now or in the future. Each participant will receive $10 in Bonus Bucks that can be used in the month of August! This class is eligible for SAWS WaterSaver Rewards points.

Texas Water Safari (aka, “The World’s Toughest Canoe Race”)
Saturday, June 10, 2023, 9 a.m. (race start) – Wednesday, June 14, 2023, 1:00 p.m. (deadline to finish)
Race Course:
Legend has it that in 1962, Frank Brown and Bill “Big Willie” George decided to take their V-bottom boat, without a motor, from San Marcos to Corpus Christi. They accomplished their mission in about thirty days and decided that other people should have the opportunity to experience the same journey. So, in 1963 they set up the first Texas Water Safari.
Today the Safari is a long, tough, non-stop marathon canoe-racing adventure, traversing 260 miles of challenging rivers and bay. Many participants enter the race with no intention of winning, but with the goal of joining the elite group of finishers and earning the coveted Texas Water Safari finisher’s patch.
Entrants must have all provisions, equipment, and items of repair in their possession at the start of the race. Nothing may be purchased by, or delivered to, a team during the race except water and/or ice. Each team must have a team captain (18 years old, or older) whose responsibility it is to follow the team by vehicle (car, truck, or bicycle) to keep track of their location and condition and to give them water and/or ice. During the Safari, teams may not receive any assistance of any kind, except verbal. Teams must be prepared to travel day and night, nonstop, to be competitive but teams who occasionally stop for sleep have been able to reach mandatory checkpoint cutoff times and cross the finish line by the 100 hour deadline.
Are you tough? Are you looking for a race that tests your limits? This is the race that could change your life and your ideas about who you are and what you are capable of achieving!
Texas Water Safari Registration Deadline (online registration only)
Entry Fee $175 (through March 31), $200 (through May 5), $250 (through May 19) per paddler. No entry fee for team captains. Must be registered by May 7 to hold prelim finish for starting position in TWS.

PROGRAM TOPIC
The global plastisphere is a marvel of human generation and a testament to the scale of our collective impact on the planet. In less than a century, we have created a novel biogeochemical cycle akin to naturally occurring ones such as the water cycle, carbon cycle, and nitrogen cycle.
Following World War II, plastic production became an industrial commodity advertised to shape the future. And it has in many ways. Since then, there is not one facet of modern life that doesn’t involve or require a plastic polymer.
The other side of that equation is the amount of plastic waste production and consequential emersion into the natural environment. The magnitude of plastic waste is shifting to represent a selective pressure on microbes around the around. Additionally, these tiny compounds are an unknown component of the global carbon budget and climate heat model that we are recently coming to realize.
Our understanding of the global plastisphere is still in its infancy, but there are also innovative and exciting solutions that will require holistic perspectives of the global scale and human dimensions to be effective. The plastisphere is here to stay, but we must find the balance.
ABOUT OUR SPEAKER
Andre Felton, M.S. is a doctoral candidate in the Integrative Biology department at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Currently, he works in Jeffrey Hutchinson’s lab investigating ephemeral freshwater systems and conducts research aimed at understanding the environmental and biological threats of microplastic pollution.
Additionally, in collaboration with a fellow UTSA doctoral student, he has developed novel methods to extract microplastics from both hail and sediment samples, and reported the first evidence of microplastics in hailstone formation and deposition. He was recently awarded the NISOD Teaching award and the NVC Excellence in Teaching award as an adjunct instructor for Alamo Colleges in San Antonio.
Andre is passionate about research to understand current and future biodiversity trends. He hopes to share that passion with minority-dominant communities and contribute to diversifying the natural sciences.
Eco Centro is located at San Antonio College, 1802 North Main Avenue @ Locust Street. There is a parking lot adjacent to Eco Centro which is entered from Locust Street.
