Hike the Dinosaur Tracks at Government Canyon

Join the Friends of Government Canyon for a guided hike at Government Canyon State Natural Area. 9 AM – noon. Discover how water 100 million years ago resulted in our being able to see these amazing animal tracks today and into the future.
We’ll experience the tracks from ground level while hiking the Joe Johnston Route, and from above via the Overlook Trail, and then return back to the Visitor Center on the Joe Johnston Route. This hike is approximately 6.25 miles in length and will have some elevation change and rocky trails. Open to all ages; no strollers please; no pets please. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian.
Registration/reservations required! This program is limited to the first 10 people who register. Reserve your spot at https://friendsofgovernmentcanyon.org/events/. Sorry, no group registrations. Registration opens on Saturday two weeks prior to the event and closes at noon the Thursday before the event.
The Natural Area front gates open at 7 AM; plan to be at the Visitor Center and ready to go no later than 8:45 AM. The hike starts promptly at 9 AM. Meet at the rainwater harvesting tower at the Visitor Center. Dress for hiking outdoors; sunscreen and hat recommended. Wear sturdy shoes for hiking in; no sandals or open-toed footwear. Bring at least TWO liters of water PER PERSON and a snack, if you like.
The Natural Area can be very busy! To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth please reserve and PRINT OUT your day pass in advance!
This is one of many 100-year celebration events happening in Texas state parks this year. Entry to a park is free on the day it hosts an official 100-Year Celebration (applies to day passes only). Guarantee entry by reserving your free day pass up to one month before this special event.
SPECIAL NOTE: Reserving a day pass is not the same as making a program reservation!
