Arturo Massol Deya

Professor Arturo A. Massol Deyá is from Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, where his parents Alexis and Tinti in 1980 founded the community self-determination organization Casa Pueblo. Masso Deyá was raised within this project and chaired its Board of Directors since 2007. This community self-determination project was responsible for protecting the critical watersheds of Puerto Rico\’s central region from an open air mine and then a gigantic pipeline. A graduate of the public school system (1986) and the University of Puerto Rico (1990), he obtained his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 1994. Since then he has been part of the faculty in the Department of Biology at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. After Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, Dr. Masso Deyá together with Casa Pueblo have led a community aid response that aims to shift the country\’s energy landscape from one dependent on fossil fuels to one that is energy independent and based on endogenous, clean, and renewable sources.
