We're Turning 10! Click to hear what's on tap for 2026.
Deceleration celebrates 10 years of existence in 2026. We will be making time to celebrate with our community deeper into the year, but we also imagine our time will be increasingly precious as top-down pressures on our collective liberties continue to increase. In what's already becoming something of a mantra among regime watchers: It's going to get worse before it gets better.
Deceleration remains committed to pushing forward against a variety of odds, as Marisol and I discuss in our most recent podcast above (an audio podcast now boosted with the power of video? Isn’t that just...television?). We are sincerely hoping you will join us in the effort.
New Website
You’ll first notice the new website.
As of today, Deceleration is proudly hosted by Ghost.org, a nonprofit deeply aligned with our values. Ghost exists beyond the reach of mischievous and notoriously accumulative billionaires. As they write:
“Our legal constitution ensures that the company can never be bought or sold, and one hundred percent of our revenue is reinvested into the product and the community.”

We believe the new site is better built for stronger community building. You will notice blazing load times, better integration across our channels, and, possibly, depending on your membership level, a login. Paying members will immediately enjoy the benefit of engaging in our stories through the comment function.
Try it out. Let’s see how it works.
New Correspondents
Lower down on the landing page, you’ll find a listing of Deceleration’s new correspondents. Each of these will be launching a newsletter in January or February that are carefully crafted to meet the moment we are in together.
Year after year, Deceleration has surveyed our readers about what they want us to prioritize. The last two years we’ve heard more about water, data centers, and power plants. We’re listening.
Water is the essential source of all life but also a highly contested resource. Power generation comes at costs both ecological and personal. At the intersection of both are events that impact lives across the state—and beyond.
- Water & Power: Heres's is a monthly newsletter I'm lifting off that covers these intersections with a skeptical eye, highlighting the latest developments around insatiable data centers, resurgence of polluting fossil fuel projects, and the broken regulatory system that too often sacrifices our most critical needs for the short-term gains for some. Water & Power is also about the countervailing community efforts steering policies back toward a system that works for all.
Plus:
- Coastline/Faultlines: Longtime contributor Gaige Davila will be tracking the growth coalitions industrializing coastal Texan and Mexican communities—and those bravely refusing erasure in this monthly newsletter. (We know "Fault lines" is two words, but looks much cooler this way in the logo.)
- ICE Watch: Roxana Rojas, who cut her teeth with Deceleration covering the first ever people’s convening on microplastics in Calhoun County, has agreed to lead our ICE Watch effort, bringing you “everything you need to know about the operations of the deportation-industrial complex in Texas.”
- Alternative Futures: Syris Valentine introduces readers to those creating alternatives to fossil fuels, to exploitation, to consumerism, to wealth inequality, by fostering new ways of living, being, and relating to their communities, cities, and landscapes that center care, cooperation, regeneration, and deep democracy.
- Marisol Cortez, who is teaching again this year, will continue building our literary footprint and explore a possible print magazine later in the year to help showcase the themed Creative Reviews she's assembling.
This work of regeneration is the work of all of our writers and community broadly, though perhaps most attentively will be addressed at Alternative Futures.
If authoritarianism by nature seeks to force a nation or people into a single “correct” identity, the world we must demand is, as the Zapatistas defined it, a world where “many worlds fit.”
Existing subscribers of Deceleration in Depth, which will continue bringing you our weekly headlines, will be auto subscribed to these new features. But it is easy to toggle on or off as you please.
Here's what that looks like on the top page:

More Video
We chose to migrate to Ghost for a variety of reasons, including the commitment to open-source and for reasons of site security with non-domestic Amsterdam-based servers. And we chose newsletters as a vehicle to do our work as it allows us the easiest access to you, our readers. Newsletters are one-to-one and exist largely outside of the ability of billionaires to influence, unlike, as we've seen time and again, social media.
But you’ll find us more active on socials going forward, too, especially with video. We recognize we have an obligation to be where people are seeking information, even if that's out in the bowels of information warfare. So far the response has been positive. Our YouTube account has exploded over the the last month or so, blooming from a humble 400 subscribers before the holidays to 6,200 today. We can’t fully explain that sudden growth but we have committed to get over some of our anxieties of sharing our faces to use the medium in service of the message.
Recently, we've uploaded video commentary on global and bioregional issues including:
- Guajolote Ranch: What is the Environmental Impact of 3,000 Homes?
- ICE, Torture, & Deportation Complex: A Deceleration Update on Lawsuits and Legal Orders
- MAGA Uber Las Americas: What's the Seizure of Venezuelan President Maduro Signals
- Fossil Fuels Killing Millions Each Year, While Trump Attacks Science
- Livestream: ICE OUT FOR GOOD. Hundreds Rally Downtown San Antonio Against Rising ICE Violence
Those who know me, know that I capture a lot of photos that don't always get rolled into Deceleration, so we're still thinking about the place of photo essays when we don't have time for lots of analysis. I intend to write a personal essay this week about dismantling white supremacy but just ended up with a bunch of pics from the MLK March in San Antonio on my Facebook and over on my photo site Emerge.photos. So there may be more of that in this space going forward.
Funding Tiers
We have other offerings in development, too. But we must make sure an effort like this continues to be funded. We're entering 2026 roughly half as endowed as we were going into 2025. And the needs are so much greater. To solidify this effort and grow this roster further will require your direct support. We’ll try to always make the opportunities and rewards for doing so obvious, but never overbearing. The advertising, for instance, helps us do the work of Deceleration, but our advertisers (who make up less than five percent of our income to date) will never dictate what stories were pursue. And they can't replace the need for direct member funding.
Over the last few years we have done a reasonable job drawing down dollars from a range of foundations and progressive funders. That's kept the weight off of our readers. But it's frankly put us in an imbalance that we have to address this year. So if you have been benefiting from the labor of our editors and writers over this last decade, I strongly encourage you to formalize that support. At the end of the day, we get the media we're willing to seed and feed.
We're thinking a lot about offering back become the analysis and reporting. For those who gave over $100 in 2025, for instance, we have some good quality Deceleration mugs headed your way via parcel post. (Our first merch!)
But we're trying to be more intentional this year, offering tiered benefits for your investment:
Free Level
- Expert Reporting & Analysis
- Podcasts
- Event Listings
Basebuilder ($5/Month)
- Free Level Benefits
- + Commenting
- + Event Invites
Ally ($15/Month)
- Basebuilder Benefits
- + Quarterly Story Planning Invites
Decelerent ($25/Month)

So please enjoy our latest podcast. Log in to try out the commenting platform. And drop us a note about your hopes for 2026 and beyond.
Email me directly if you have any trouble w/ the new site or have thoughts on where we should steer this thing next.
Each newsletter will have a simple survey too. More of this? Less of this? But just like comments, you'll need to be logged in, I think.
So make sure to get that sorted:

Onward Together!
Greg
