Conversation on Race: Chicanx Pláticas on San Antonio’s Racist Past and Present
December 14, 2024 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Free

Join us on Saturday, December 14 from 8 am to 5 pm for Esperanza’s Offering to the National Conversation on Race: Chicanx Pláticas on San Antonio’s Racist Past and Present, Our Shared Future, Reckoning with our Racial Past. This is a day dedicated to understanding San Antonio’s racist past and present through pláticas, poetry, art and popular education.
Dr. Carmen Tafolla, beloved former Poet Laureate of Texas, will guide the audience through a multi-disciplinary experience that demonstrates a chronology of San Antonio’s policies that make us the city with the most unequal income distribution in the country. Join us to learn how we got here and help us imagine a new way forward.
Enjoy the opportunity to behold and work with a creative and spiritual art installation, a collaboration between local artists Red Rojas and Rudy Herrera.
Featured talks include:
- Award-winning Historian Dr. Monica Muñoz Martinez on a chronology of cultural genocide in the region and San Antonio.
- Demographers Dr. Rogelio Saenz and Dr. Monica Cruz examine the “Two San Antonios” via an intergenerational approach, demonstrating the stark inequalities of our hometown.
- Dr. Marisol Cortez deepens understanding of power players past and present with the “17 White Men framework” developed by former city councilwoman Maria Antonietta Berriozábal.
- Historian Dr. Verónica A. Méndez, curator at the National Museum of American History, discusses the politics of interpretation and museum practices, and invites us to reimagine new ways of seeing and documenting ourselves through the Museo del Westside.
