Guided Hike to Government Canyon’s Protected Habitat Area

Embark on an exciting all-day hiking adventure with knowledgeable guides as they lead you into the remote corners of Government Canyon SNA. The exclusive Protected Habitat Area, accessible only from September to February each year, provides a unique opportunity for participants to immerse themselves in views and trails that few Government Canyon visitors get to experience.
The journey commences at 8:00 am, ensuring a full day of exploration. While the group aims to return to the Visitor Center by 3:00 pm, the actual timing may vary depending on factors like walking speed and other variables. Prospective participants should be prepared for an entire day outdoors, ready to soak in the distinctive landscapes that await.
Who is Invited:
The adventure is open to individuals aged 14 and older. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and please note that pets are not allowed. To join, participants must be physically capable of hiking 12-13 miles over broken, rocky terrain, with a significant amount of elevation gain and loss.
Registration & Fees:
While registration is not mandatory, the hike is limited to the first 12 individuals who check in at the rainwater harvesting tower between 7:30 and 7:45 am. Although the hike itself is free, standard Natural Area entry fees apply. For a smoother entrance, it’s recommended to pre-purchase and print out a Day Pass. It’s important to note that reserving a Day Pass is distinct from making a program reservation.
When & Where to Meet:
Gather at the rainwater harvesting tower near the Visitors’ Center. The Natural Area front gates open at 7:00 am, with check-in scheduled between 7:30 and 7:45 am. Since the hike group size is limited to 12, make sure to arrive early. The hike officially starts at 8:00 am, promising a day filled with adventure and exploration.
