Warrior Girl w/ Carmen Tafolla and Azul

September 8, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Join the Esperanza for the book premiere of Carmen Tafolla’s 40th book, “Warrior Girl” (Penguin, 2023). It will be a fun evening of music, poetry, and cultural affirmation, as Poet Laureate Carmen Tafolla and singer/songwriter Azul interweave excerpts from Warrior Girl with Azul’s performance of songs, both traditional and original.

Warrior Girl, Tafolla’s first novel in verse, is set in San Antonio’s Westside. It tells the story of Celina, a 12-year-old girl who—through the power of celebration, the strength of her values, and the support of her grandmother and friends—survives discrimination, economic difficulties, her father’s deportation, and a pandemic. In the process, Celina reclaims her name, her language, and her heritage.

Appropriate for middle-grade readers age 10-14, it has a broad appeal to young adults and adults.

Reception and book signing to follow the program, with books for sale by The Twig Book Shop. For more information, call: 210-228-0201
