Feeling overwhelmed when tasked with plant selection for your landscape?
Our local nurseries are chock full of every plant you can imagine but if you’ve finally narrowed your focus to creating a water-wise habitat, why not start with tried-and-true native plants?
This workshop is designed to help you with a solid plant list for starting a new garden or for replacing water guzzling plant species.

Event Details
There is a big buzz around this historic eclipse, and at this event we are creating a lasting buzz by planting native pollinator plants and learning how to regenerate healthy soil, healthy hydrology, healthy groundwater, healthy springflows, and healthy ecosystems.
If you are not in the path of totality, where the sun will be totally blocked by the moon for about 4 minutes, you should find a spot within this path. There are plenty of options across the USA from Mexico to Maine. If you are even slightly out of this path, you will not see a total eclipse (ask me how I know). I am offering up a 30 acre ecosystem regeneration demonstration site near the center of totality to folks who love nature, and who are smart or curious about native plants and how we can increase the biodiversity of beneficial plants in the Hill Country.
- This site has hosted a few Permablitz gatherings since 2020, and the regeneration results have already been a huge success!
- If you have ever participated in a permablitz, Please come.
- If you have a permaculture design certificate, Please come.
- If you are a plant nerd, bird nerd, reptile nerd, a master gardener, master naturalist, or a member of the Native Plant Society of Texas, or Audubon, or Sierra Club, Please come.
- If you have experience with running a bioblitz, documenting this biodiversity through I-Naturalist or similar platforms, Please educate me, and Please come.
Red Bluff creek is flowing clear, clean, and beautiful, so there will be places to swim and cool off.
Hope to see y’all there!!!!!
Please RSVP to get more info, and to help me get an accurate headcount. Family friendly, but there are the typical risks associated with outdoor adventures.
For additional information or if you have additional suggestions, please call Bryan at 2!O-2!8-79!5.

Event Details
This session draws from the work of renowned land artist, Richard Long. Long is a British sculptor who is most well-known for his walking paths. Engaging more with the process than with the final outcome, Long’s practice turns walking into a meditative and intentional act, calling attention to the ephemerality of movement, the (only slightly) more lasting effect our movement has on the Earth, and the overall impermanence of experiences, objects, and ourselves. Participants will work in collaboration with the landscape to create their own ephemeral pieces and will debrief the experience of doing so in a group discussion.

Event Details
The City of San Antonio and Brackenridge Park Conservancy said this process of building a “reconciled plan” for Brackenridge Park would not impact previously approved projects—including the bond-funded redevelopment project now launching another wave of attacks on migratory birds in the park as the City prepares to remove elder trees from the headwaters to fix the river wall and construct a new “story of water” through the river channel.
Clearly they were telling the truth about that bit.
So here we are with a third meeting on this “reconciliation.” What could it actually deliver if it can’t stop the chainsaws and board knockers?
Invite reads:
Join us for an informational meeting about the Reconciled Plan for Brackenridge Park. City staff and the consultant team will share the results of prior public input which includes a new review process and tools for evaluating future projects at Brackenridge Park.

March Topic: Nature-based Solutions for Texas Karst Country
Our beautiful Texas karst country is moving towards rocky desertification. To reverse this unproductive trend we need to shift our focus from clearing out woody brush to implementing nature-based solutions. Nature-based solutions mimic or utilize amenities and processes found in nature and include using woody brush as part of the solution. Applying these strategies to Texas karst country will help reduce erosion, flooding, and fire risk, and increase groundwater storage capacity, biodiversity, and long-term resilience.

San Antonio faces an extreme heat crisis! Last year was the hottest year in at least 125,000 years. The last 10 years have all ranked among the hottest years on record. This excess heat is being primarily driven by planet-warming gases from industry and concurrent deforestation at home and around the world. This dangerous trend continues in 2024, breaking heat records through winter and into spring. We are in a climate emergency. Elected leaders aren’t doing enough to prepare and protect our communities. Journalists aren’t communicating the story of climate breakdown. In Bexar County, our health agencies aren’t even keeping track of who is dying from the heat. Join us for a community forum to discuss local heat impacts, understand policies that could help keep our communities safe, network and support mutual aid efforts, and develop campaigns to navigate Earth’s changes. We will hear from speakers who are experts in the fields of heat and public health and engaged in reducing the suffering this heat is causing. We will engage with heat preparation kits and connect with residents actively addressing our shared climate challenges. We can save lives and restore our natural systems that keep our planet in balance.
Join us for a Panel Discussion w/:
- Rose Jones, Medical Anthropologist
- Adelita Cantu, UTHSC-SA, Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments
- Lotus Rios, Harlandale Sunshine Pantry
There will be tabling by resilience and mutual aid organizations, individuals, and agencies followed by community dialogue to develop community-led solutions.

¡ÚNASE A NOSOTROS EL 17 DE ABRIL EN TANDEM EN EL LADO SUR DE San Antonio!

Event Details
San Antonians for Rail Transit (SART) is a group dedicated to promoting safe, effective rail options at every level for San Antonio. We are not opposed to bus systems, but realize that in a city of over a million, even the best-managed bus system is simply not sufficient. Modern transit requires a multi-modal approach, maximizing the benefits of each form of transit.
If you’re interested in running for the Board, we are still accepting nominations. Please send us a short bio paragraph introducing yourself and a second short paragraph about what directions you’d like to see SART travel in the coming year and we will share them with the membership at-large prior to the elections.
1. Lone Star Rail: The creation of a commuter light rail on the I-35 corridor connecting San Antonio to Austin and the cities in between. We advocate for a cessation of plans to expand I-35 and instead divert those funds in purchase of the San Antonio-Austin rail corridor and the eventual creation of high-speed rail connections.
2. San Antonio Streetcar: The development of an effective street-level rail system designed for not only tourists but also commuters, students and residents.
3. Safer Crossings and Safer Streets: The construction of elevated street crossings throughout the urban space. No urban traffic should ever have to stop for a train to pass. We also advocate for rail as a safer means of transit than private vehicle.
4. Expanded Intercity Rail: We want San Antonio to become a regional hub for rail transit. Amtrak should increase its westbound Texas Eagle trains, and all Sunset Limited trains to daily service. It should restore direct connection between San Antonio and Oklahoma City and eventually Wichita via an expanded Heartland Flyer. The Sunset Limited should be restored to its previous route, giving San Antonians direct rail links to Mobile, Jacksonville and Orlando.
5. Excursion Rail: Amtrak should create regional weekend excursion rail connections to Marfa, TX, Big Bend National Park (via Alpine, TX), San Marcos and other appropriate destinations.
6. The Future of Rail: We are excited for new ideas that push the boundaries of rail in our city and do not limit our vision of the future to the above. They are the first steps.
As always, thanks for your support.

Event Details
Over the past few months, SART has partnered with UTSA Architecture professors Paola Aguirre Serrano and Dennis Milam of Borderless Studio. Their students have spent half a semester planning out designs for a potential new multi-modal transit station at the former Lone Star Brewery in Southtown.
An open gallery showing their work to the public. We are particularly excited that they are partnering with VIA who is offering the atrium of The Grand, the historic westside train station that now serves as the agency’s headquarters, located at 123 N Medina St.
We will be encouraging elected officials, journalists, and the public to come out to start a conversation about the train station that San Antonio deserves and we’d love for all of you to come out and show your support. The event should be a lot of fun, and it’s also a good opportunity to show VIA, city officials, and the press that San Antonio supports rail.

Join us to learn the step by step the process of soil solarization so that you may experience a successful gardening venture.
Soil solarization is a simple, nonchemical and inexpensive way to use the sun’s energy to prepare a garden for planting. Solarization involves watering a patch of soil, covering it with clear plastic, then allowing trapped heat from the sun to bake the soil to kill off weeds and pests — a tried and true method for snuffing out noxious weeds in preparation for planting your waterwise garden.

Rainwater harvesting has so many benefits, from happy plants to money in your wallet. With so many things to consider, it can be hard to know where or how to start. This short workshop will touch on all of the basics of Rainwater Harvesting, and questions to ask yourself.
This ONLINE workshop is good for those looking to “dip their toes” in rainwater harvesting. If you decide to learn more, our “Rainwater Harvesting: Medium to Large Scale” workshop on June 5 is a GREAT follow up to this one!
