Since 2006, the peaceCENTER has celebrated The Blessing of the Peacemakers, a joyous hour-long interfaith ceremony featuring music, prayer, new inclusive and innovative rituals and inspirational speakers. It is the first event marking the beginning of the 64-day Season for Nonviolence and honors all of the peacemakers in the city.
During the Blessing of the Peacemakers the peaceCENTER appoints the San Antonio Peace Laureate: a local voice of wisdom and experience to speak for peace and justice in San Antonio. This year we are honored to announce that the 2023 San Antonio Peace Laureates are: Rosalyn Collier, Ann Helmke, and Susan Ives, for 25 years of friendship and advocacy, sharing their wisdom, power and love to advance peace & justice in San Antonio, and beyond.
The Season for Nonviolence, January 30 – April 4, is a 64-day educational, media, and grassroots campaign that demonstrates that nonviolence is a powerful way to heal, transform, and empower our lives and our communities. Inspired in 1998 by the 50th and 30th memorial anniversaries of the assassinations of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., this international event honors their vision for an empowered, nonviolent world. It has been endorsed by such notables as the Dalai Lama and the late Coretta Scott King.

On Monday, board members received the future energy generation recommendation from the Rate Advisory Committee. RAC members were strongly divided on their recommendation: 13 members recommending a pathway supposed to hit our 2030 carbon-reductions target (but failing 2040 and 2050) by swapping out coal for gas; seven members voted instead for plans much stronger on renewable energy.

We need urgent action to address the climate crisis, but the fossil fuel industry continues to put profits first. Join us on Tuesday, January 31 from 7:00-8:00 pm ET (4:00-5:00 pm PT) for an exclusive conversation with Nathaniel Rich, author of Losing Earth: A Recent History for a look back at the history of the climate movement.
Losing Earth tells the story of a group of scientists, politicians, and strategists who sounded the alarm about the climate crisis and those who pushed back. By exploring the beginning of climate denialism, this insightful book shows how the fossil fuel industry weakens climate policy through misinformation and political influence.
The urgency of the climate crisis has only increased. So, where do we go from here?Join this discussion with author Nathaniel Rich about our recent history and how we can move forward toward a better future. Plus, join live for a chance to win your own copy of Losing Earth!
Food & Water Watch builds grassroots power to stand up against the oil and gas industry and fight for meaningful change. Together, we can bring people together to fight the fossil fuel industry and press our leaders to pass laws that protect our planet.

San Antonio’s Parks and Public Works departments are determined to restore or recreate historic features at Brackenridge Park within a new development vision, including a performance plaza. Their vision, however, has run into extended controversy over their claimed needs to remove towering heritage trees from the San Antonio River’s headwaters and forcefully evict migratory birds from the park. Though caught lying repeatedly on key elements of the bond-funded project, COSA staff have persevered and are are now taking their proposal for the first phase of the project to the Texas Historical Commission for state approval. Roughly 50 trees would be removed to make way in this first phase, including some towering oaks.

This conversation on Buddhism and Ecology addresses the notions of wild and rewilding from both internal and external perspectives; how can wildness be understood in relation to contemplative practice, as cultivation of the wilderness around us and a felt sense of the wild in ourselves? The conversation draws from the work of Gary Snyder, an award-winning writer, environmentalist, and Buddhist practitioner, and by using visual prompts from Kaisu’s environmental art.
Dr. Kaisu Koski is a cross-disciplinary artist with a background in performance, film, and biological materials. She collaborates with scientists, clinicians, and engineers, focusing on the climate crisis, multispecies relationships, and the art-science methodology. Kaisu is an Associate Professor of Art and Design at Lab4Living at Sheffield Hallam University in the UK.

Join us Thursday February 9, for “Walk on the River: A Black History of the Alamo City.” In this independent film we take the time to document both the history and the contributions African-Americans have made to the fabric of San Antonio, Texas from Emancipation to the Civil Rights movement. We chronicle the path of freed Blacks establishing communities, churches and schools in the 1800’s to thriving Black-owned businesses that flourished during the Jim Crow era.
The original Walk on the River, completed in August of 2018 is one of the most successful documentary films in San Antonio, TX. It has helped to educate thousands about the Black Experience here in our city.
We touch on religion, politics, education, social organizations and community all in an attempt to paint a vivid picture of life for Black San Antonians in the past to help create a knowledge base, a sense of pride and a blueprint for the next generations moving forward.
“Walk on the River” features interviews from very influential people in our community like:
- Mario Salas
- Ed Glosson
- Dr. Rudyard Hilliard
- Nettie Hinton
- Lon Taylor
- Vera Williams Young
- D.L. Grant
- … and more

January Topic & Speaker
The San Antonio Zoo’s Center for Conservation & Research (SAZCCR) has active conservation programs across the globe. Danté Fenolio, who runs the Center for Conservation & Research for San Antonio Zoo (SAZCCR), will describe several projects, including:
- A collaboration with indigenous groups in Amazonian Peru, working to maintain stands of rainforest on traditional lands, in spite of very challenging logging, hydrocarbon extraction, and mining activities.
- A partnership with the Austral University in Valdivia, Chile, developing a series of labs to breed critically endangered amphibians from the temperate rainforests in the region, to address stressors from deforestation and forest fragmentation.
- A partnership with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, documenting the diversity and distribution of cavefishes in south China; amazingly, China has 120 species of cavefishes, more than any other region of the world, however nearly all are threatened with contamination and over-extraction of groundwater.
- A partnership with Japanese biologists to keep Japanese Giant Salamanders in the wild, by implementing “salamander ladders”, along streams with small to mid-sized dams that isolate populations and reduce genetic diversity.
- The DEEPEND project, a consortium of biologists examining impacts of oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico on the local species.
- Finally, SAZCCR works with state and federal wildlife authorities to bioinventory subterranean habitats ranging from the Ozarks to Texas to the Floridan Aquifer; it also develops captive husbandry and breeding protocols for imperiled and critically endangered species.

Field Ornithology Camp at Hog Island
Join us Wednesday, January 25 in the conference room at Alamo Colleges District, 2222 N. Alamo, for our first in-person gathering for a monthly meeting in almost three years! We’d like to invite you to arrive at 6:00 PM for refreshments and socializing before the program begins at 6:30 PM. If you plan to attend in person, please sign up here so we know how many people we will need to accommodate with refreshments and seating.
Yvette Stewart, Community Outreach Coordinator for Audubon Texas, will present via Zoom about her Field Ornithology Camp at Hog Island, which was a week of all things avian, learning in small groups, field settings about bird biology and evolution, nesting behavior, songs, migration, and conservation. Yvette has a Bachelor’s in Wildlife and Conservation Biology from the University of Rhode Island and Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Texas. A lover of all creatures from tiny spiders to soaring eagles, Yvette is most happy when she’s showing others the wonders of the natural world and prompting people to learn and grow in the great outdoors. She has been with Audubon Texas since 2018 and currently leads two state-wide programs: Audubon’s Conservation Leaders for Young Women (ACL) and Bird City Texas (BCT).
Corina Solis, Senior Conservation Assistant, Mitchell Lake Audubon Center (MLAC), will give a recap in person of the camp she attended, Birds of Maine Island: A service week.

The campers learned seabird identification, bird banding, adaptations, migration, and ecology while participating in active restoration work. Corina has a degree in Biology with a concentration in Ecology from Texas A&M-San Antonio and has been with MLAC for four years.

January Event:
The campers learned seabird identification, bird banding, adaptations, migration, and ecology while participating in active restoration work. Corina has a degree in Biology with a concentration in Ecology from Texas A&M-San Antonio and has been with MLAC for four years.
This meeting is approved for AAMN AT hours.
