The Spring 2018 Kairos Fellowship Equity Cohort is an eight month paid on-the-job training program for emerging leaders of color in the field of civic technology.
Kairos, an ancient Greek word, refers to “the right or opportune moment for action.”
In recent years, we have witnessed inspiring movements for human rights that are calling attention to structural violence, racism, transphobia, and inequality even in the face of violent and repressive attacks against these liberation movements. Civic technology and online campaigning have fundamentally changed how we organize. Yet our online tools are not equally accessible to everyone.
Problems like algorithmic bias, lack of security, and online harassment plague our online tools and organizing practices, and many of these tools were not built with people of color in mind.
The Kairos Fellowship is designed to address the racial and gender disparity that exists within civic technology and organizing by pairing robust recruitment with a training and mentorship program to develop a new network of tech-savvy leaders of color.
Kairos will match and place 15 fellows at leading national and state organizations where Fellows will work mostly on issue advocacy campaigns on the federal and state level. Fellows will receive hands on training, mentorship, and an eight-month paid online campaigner apprenticeship—from May 2018 – December 2018.
